Our Name:
Amoskeag: “The name Amoskeag was chosen because of its unique regional character. It is believed that the Indian word “Amoskeag” (Probably originally Namoskeag) means “one takes small fish.” Jesus said to his disciples, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19). It is our intention to build on the heritage of our forefathers by spreading the same gospel to a fallen and lost world. Just as the early settlers caught fish at the Amoskeag Falls, so from its inception the desire of Amoskeag Presbyterian Church is to catch people for Christ in order that they may be saved from sin and eternal death, and be nourished on His life-giving Word. It is a cause with eternal consequences.” – From: Heritage: A History of Amoskeag Presbyterian Church
Presbyterian: ‘Presbyterian’ is a term that describes our church government. God has ordained the visible church to be cared for and ruled by a plurality of elders (Presbyters). Our churches are not independent, but express unity by being organized into Presbyteries (the regional church) and the General Assembly (Acts 15, Acts 16, 1 Timothy 3, Titus 1). We are a congregation of the of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, under the Presbytery of New York and New England.
Church: The church is the visible manifestation of the kingdom of God on earth composed of the assembly of all those who profess saving faith in Christ and who promise submission to his commands and their children.
Our Beliefs:
At Amoskeag Presbyterian Church we believe the Bible consisting of the Old and New Testaments is the inerrant and infallible Word of the Triune God, our only rule of faith and practice. Our beliefs, lives, and worship are regulated by the Word of God alone. The message of the Bible is that God has provided salvation for men, women, and children in the person and work of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ, through his perfect life, sin-atoning death, and resurrection has provided reconciliation with God. We believe the truths of the Bible are best summarized in the Westminster Confession of Faith, Westminster Larger Catechism, and Westminster Shorter Catechism.
Our Worship:
Worship is our chief and highest calling. “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever” (WSC 1). The public worship of the Triune God on the Lord’s Day is a sweet foretaste of heaven, indeed it is heaven on earth. What is worship like at Amoskeag Presbyterian Church?
- It is reverent and joyful. Our desire is to worship God as He requires “in spirit and truth” (Jn. 4) “with reverence and awe” (Heb. 12). We are reverent because “it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Heb. 10:31) and because “our God is a consuming fire,” therefore, we should “offer unto God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe.” (Heb. 12:28-29). It is joyful because we have been reconciled to God and have confidence that we may enter into the heavenly holy place by the blood of Jesus Christ.
- It is dialogical. God speaks to us in His Word (the call to worship, call to repentance and confession of our sin, assurance of pardon, Scripture readings, the preaching of the Word, and the celebration of the Lord’s Supper), and we respond with hymns of praise, prayer, and offerings.
- The preaching is expositional and Christ centered.“We preach Christ crucified…Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Cor. 1:24).
